As soon as you get North of the M4 motorway you encounter the ground rising as an escarpment. This runs both east and west an provide scope for some good fun off road.
It also means that a bit of off road Cardiff cycling, mountain biking is within the scope of a majority of Cardiff residents without having to drive anywhere.
The areas to consider would be Caerphilly common and the ridge running through the centre of the map, there are opportunities in Coed Wenault, and from Cefn On Park.
A short distance from Cardiff there are so truly excellent off road cycle trails for those interested in mountain biking.
Afan Argoed and Glyncorrwg are to be found in the valleys north of Port Talbot. Cwm Carn is an excellent centre that offers both downhill runs of varying degrees with off road adventure.

The centre only opened this year and is a short trip up the A470 to Merthyr, there is a small entry fee of 5.00 pounds but it is well worth it, it has simply loads of trails to suit all levels of riding ability.

Cardiff Mountain Biking - Llantrisant downhill trails
There is a collection of trails, including downhill over at Llantrisant downhill trails.
They are at red route level so are challenging but not extreme. Currently there are two downhill trails. They are maintained by Llantrisant MTB club.

Leave M4 towards Llantrisant (Junction 34) onto A4119. Take a left at the next roundabout. (A473)
Go straight over next roundabout (McDonalds on your right).
Turn right at next roundabout towards Talbot Green,
Turn first left before you go over the small bridge. (So you are following signs for the Fire service HQ).
The small road leads to the Forestry Commission car parking area on your left.
Caerphilly - Parc y Van jumps
The site has a bit of history with the previous Forestry Commission manager removing the set
of jumps that used to be here pre 2012 for safety reasons. Today there is a nice set of ramps
and jumps with fun in mind as can be seen in the video.
If you are travelling from Cardiff Mountain biking or BMX ing doesn't get much better than this.
